The Difference Between Photographing Newborns at 7–20 Days vs. 3–7 Weeks
One of the questions we’re often asked is: “What’s the best age for newborn photos?” While there isn’t one “perfect” answer, there are some big differences between photographing brand-new babies (7–20 days old) and slightly older newborns (3–7 weeks old). Both stages are beautiful—we just approach them a little differently.
7–20 Days Old
Babies are typically very sleepy and flexible during this stage.
They can comfortably curl into those cozy, womb-like poses (like the popular “froggy”).
Sessions usually flow smoothly with longer stretches of calm sleep.
3–7 Weeks Old
Babies are more alert and awake, which means more chances for eye contact and personality to shine.
They’re usually less flexible, so certain poses may not be as comfortable—but we focus on natural, relaxed setups instead.
Expect stretches, kicks, and sweet facial expressions that feel a little more “baby” than “newborn.”
Our Takeaway
Every stage is worth photographing! The early days offer that classic, dreamy newborn look, while older newborns give us bright eyes, expressions, and a peek at their growing personalities. Whether your baby is a week old or a month old, our goal is always to capture timeless portraits you’ll treasure forever.
