The Difference Between Photographing Newborns at 7–20 Days vs. 3–7 Weeks

One of the questions we’re often asked is: “What’s the best age for newborn photos?” While there isn’t one “perfect” answer, there are some big differences between photographing brand-new babies (7–20 days old) and slightly older newborns (3–7 weeks old). Both stages are beautiful—we just approach them a little differently.

7–20 Days Old

  • Babies are typically very sleepy and flexible during this stage.

  • They can comfortably curl into those cozy, womb-like poses (like the popular “froggy”).

  • Sessions usually flow smoothly with longer stretches of calm sleep.

3–7 Weeks Old

  • Babies are more alert and awake, which means more chances for eye contact and personality to shine.

  • They’re usually less flexible, so certain poses may not be as comfortable—but we focus on natural, relaxed setups instead.

  • Expect stretches, kicks, and sweet facial expressions that feel a little more “baby” than “newborn.”

Our Takeaway
Every stage is worth photographing! The early days offer that classic, dreamy newborn look, while older newborns give us bright eyes, expressions, and a peek at their growing personalities. Whether your baby is a week old or a month old, our goal is always to capture timeless portraits you’ll treasure forever.
